Internal Tools Engineer Full Time

The Job

You would serve as a force multiplier across multiple teams, building internal tools, automating workflows, and solving problems that don’t fit neatly into any single team’s backlog. One week you might be building a candidate enrichment pipeline for hiring, and the next you might be setting up a continuous security scanning system for the dev team or prototyping an interactive experience that goes beyond what Figma can do.

This role requires someone who can move fluidly between different problem domains and technologies. You need to understand when to reach for a quick script, when to build a proper application, and when agentic AI is the right tool for the job. AI fluency is important here, but this isn’t an “AI Engineer” role. You’re a generalist developer who happens to have strong instincts for where AI can meaningfully accelerate a workflow and where it would just get in the way.

You’d be working closely with people across product, design, development, and QA to understand their pain points and deliver solutions. Some of these will be polished internal apps, others will be scrappy automations. The common thread is making people’s work easier and faster.

To give you a sense of the range, here are examples of real problems you’d be expected to tackle:

Building tools that augment our hiring process by enriching candidate data, surfacing relevant signals, and helping the team make better-informed decisions faster
Helping the design team streamline backup workflows and file management with purpose-built tooling
Prototyping advanced UI concepts that push beyond standard design tools
Setting up continuous security review infrastructure so we’re effectively pentesting ourselves on an ongoing basis
Rapidly building rough MVPs to test product ideas, particularly around novel AI applications in our platform
Identifying and automating repetitive processes that slow teams down, whether through traditional scripting or AI-driven approaches
Our core application is a complex Laravel-based system, and while this role is distinct from our backend development team, familiarity with that ecosystem will help you move faster. We rely heavily on AWS, and many of the tools you build will interface with our existing infrastructure and third-party services.

You would be working with an all-remote team that’s used to getting work done through text-based channels (backlogs, wikis, and Slack conversations). Great text-based asynchronous communication is key to this position. You have to be a good writer, being able to explain your ideas clearly to the rest of the team. Given the cross-team nature of this role, strong communication is especially critical since you’ll need to understand problems described by people with very different technical backgrounds.

Skills

This role is deliberately broad, and we don’t expect anyone to be an expert in everything. Here are the areas we’d assess candidates on. Strength in one area can offset weakness in another.

General software development ability across multiple languages and environments
Experience with PHP and/or Laravel
Strong understanding of AI capabilities and limitations, including practical experience with LLMs, agentic workflows, and AI-assisted development
Ability to rapidly prototype and ship functional tools without over-engineering
Experience with automation, scripting, and workflow optimization
Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and services (AWS)
Experience with API integrations and working with third-party services
Comfort working across the stack (backend, frontend, infrastructure) as needed
Experience with security tooling or DevOps practices would be a plus

Position

This is a full-time remote position. We’re used to working as a dispersed team so you must be cool with collaborating online and a lot over text. We’re flexible on schedules, but at least 4 hours of overlap with a core of your team is mandatory.
